Putting it to Use
On Tuesday, August 29 Mayor Leonard Jones and Board of Aldermen unanimously approved an ordinance placing a local use tax on the November 7, 2018 ballot.
The move comes after the Missouri legislature decided every Missouri city would need voters to approve continued collection of local sales taxes on motor vehicles by passing one of two measures by November 2018:
- an out-of-state motor vehicles sales tax
- a local use tax
Currently, out-of-state motor vehicles sales taxes bring in nearly $600,000 in annual revenue for Grandview. The City has collected this revenue for 40-50 years.
A local use tax would cover motor vehicles bought out of state, but would also apply the local sales tax of 2.5% to online or catalog sales IF the company also has a physical store or office in the state of Missouri, like Walmart, Target, etc.
