anitary Sewers are intended to collect sewage but also occassionally become clogged and may back-up into individual homes and businesses. This may be caused by a blockage in the sanitary sewer system or severe rainfall, which causes the system to be overpowered by water. In such cases the Public Works Department should be notified as soon as possible. Please call the Public Works Department at (816) 316-4856 during regular business hours. If a sanitary sewer back up occurs any time outside of regular business hours, please call the Police Dispatcher at (816) 316-4980. The Police Dispatcher will contact the Public Works Department immediately and relay the information. The Public Works Department will check City lines for problems and report the findings to the citizen. Note: Citizens are responsible for the maintenance of sanitary sewer lines until the connection to the public sewer is established.
he City offers a program whereby property owners can receive partial reimbursement for the installation of a sanitary sewer back-flow prevention device. The sanitary sewer back-flow prevention device is a valve that is installed at the point where a basement drain connects to the main house sewer line which leads to the City's sanitary sewer line. The back-flow prevention device acts like a valve preventing the City's sewer from backing up in the main house sewer line. The City will reimburse the property owner 50% of the cost, not to exceed $1,000, on the installation based upon the lowest legitimate bid. For more details, call the Public Works Director at (816) 316-4855 or the City Engineer at (816) 316-4857 during regular business hours.
