The Patrol Division is the largest entity within the Grandview Police Department and the backbone of all Law Enforcement efforts in the city. It is commanded by the Patrol Captain – Captain Dean Hutson.
Included in this division are four shifts of officers – each supervised by a veteran Patrol Sergeant and one Special Operation Detail unit, which provides support to patrol operations during peak hours and can also be used for stakeouts, surveillance operations, initial screening of narcotic violation complaints, and direct action missions in areas needing an additional Police presence.
Included in the Special Operation Detail unit is the canine team, which is used to detect concealed narcotics, to conduct building searches for offenders in hiding, assist in the arrest or prevent the escape of serious or violent offenders, protect officers or others from death or serious injury, track suspects or locate lost or missing persons, and locate evidence of crime.
A unit within the Patrol Division is the Traffic/Motorcycle Unit. The Traffic/Motorcycle Unit is used for traffic enforcement, parades, and escorts for dignitaries and funerals. This unit is also responsible for detailed investigation of major traffic accidents and specialized traffic enforcement operations.
In conjunction with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Greater Kansas City, our department has developed a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) which consists of 21 officers. Officers skilled in crisis intervention receive formal training in how to identify persons with mental illness and how to effectively resolve issues with minimal force. They also are educated on the various facilities which
assist persons with mental illness and how to contact these facilities for referrals.
