Public Works Maintenance Technician - Sewer

Position Summary

The purpose of this classification is to maintain and repair sewer collection and transportation systems for residential and commercial wastewater for the city. The work is performed under the direction of the Sewer Maintenance Supervisor.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Cleans sewers using high pressure/vacuum sewer cleaners and rodding machines; removes debris and other obstructions as necessary
  • Performs various manual sewer labor duties including repairing storm inlets, replacing manhole rings and covers, and replacing pipes
  • Responds to emergency calls to perform flood clearance and other emergency duties including the erection of barricades, removal of sewer obstructions, removal of debris to clear streets and assistance of other emergency responders
  • Operates snow plow and material spreader to plow or spread salt on assigned snow routes or snow districts for extended shifts
  • Performs various manual labor duties including cutting weeds, trimming trees, and finishing concrete; manually cleans and inspects sewer manholes
  • Operates light- medium- and heavy-duty equipment to complete all tasks; performs pre- operational inspections of equipment including visual inspection prior to use; performs minor maintenance and service; requests repairs as necessary
  • Transports personnel and materials
  • Assists in the maintenance of the Public Works Facility including painting, carpentry, and plumbing
  • Prepares, completes, and maintains a variety of paperwork and documentation including daily progress reports, complaint forms, inspection forms and utility locates
  • Performs general custodial duties for the Public Works Facility
  • Performs safety inspections of equipment including fire extinguishers and first-aid kits
  • Availability to be on call a minimum of one week a month, and for ALL snow events
  • All other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Education, Qualifications, Certifications, Licenses

High school diploma or GED and the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance

Valid driver’s license with clean driving record

Ability to train and obtain a class A Driver’s License, with air brake and tanker endorsements within 90 days is required

Must pass a background check

Must pass pre-employment drug and physical tests

 

Preferred

· Four to nine months of vocational/technical training in Sewer Maintenance

·  One year of related experience or any combination of education or experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities

·Current possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

  • Ability to process, calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes the ability to perform subsequent action in relation to these computational operations
  • Ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to others within well-established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from other Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, snow routes, traffic control requests, vehicle pre-operational inspection forms, utility locates and general operating manuals
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing with supervisor, co-workers, mechanics, other departments, suppliers, and the public
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; calculate percentages, and decimals; and may require the ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Involves semi- routine standardized work, with some latitude for independent judgment regarding choices of action
  • Ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving a variety of generally predefined duties that may be subject to frequent change

 

Physical Requirements

  • Requires the ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments, such as jack hammer, chain saw, snow plow, rodder, vactor, heavy equipment, shovel, pick, rakes and tampers
  • Requires the ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs in performing movements requiring skill and training, such as trimming trees
  • Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling moderately heavy objects and materials, twenty to fifty pounds
  • Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, sounds and textures associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks

 

Pay & Benefits

$20.54 - $27.73 hourly, depending on qualifications.
