Beginning April 1, Grandview customers will see a sewer rate adjustment included on their water bills. The average residential customer, a family using 5,000 gallons a month, will see an increase of $4.14 a month-- an 11% increase. Even with this change, Grandview still has the lowest sewer rates in the Kansas City Metro area.
A Shrinking Sanitary Sewer Fund
Sanitary Sewer Fund reserves allow the City to make emergency repairs and perform preventative maintenance. Over the past three years, the fund has dropped about $3 million due to emergency repairs, the increased cost of construction and historic high inflation.
The fund can not sustain this impact over the long term. April's rate adjustment will help the City close the funding gap while also ensuring if a sewer becomes an emergency on your street, we get it fixed ASAP.
Why 11%?
After the city raised sewer rates in 2021, it commissioned an independent study of Grandview sanitary sewer rates to evaluate whether existing rates were sufficient to fund ongoing operations, necessary maintenance, and long-term capital improvements for the sewer system.
The engineering firm conducting the study concluded current rates were inadequate to meet both present and future funding needs, and recommended the City increase sewer base and usage rates by 11 percent annually beginning 2024 through 2028.
