 Elected Officials and Length of Term

The Mayor, six Aldermen, and Municipal Judge are the City's elected officials. The Mayor and Municipal Judge are elected at-large (from any City Ward).  The Mayor is elected every four years.  The Municipal Judge is elected every two years. Two Aldermen are elected from each of the City's three Wards and serve staggered terms every four years. The City's general election is non-partisan. The term of office is four years for all Aldermen.

Filing for Candidacy
General elections are held the first Tuesday after the first Monday in April each year. Filing for elected official candidacy is done at the City Clerk’s office during normal business hours, Monday through Friday at the City Hall located at 1200 Main Street, Grandview, Missouri. The filing fee is $10.00 and is payable by cash or check at the time of filing. The filing period begins the 17th Tuesday before the election and closes the 14th Tuesday before the election. The City Clerk's office is closed from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. daily for lunch. City offices are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and days designated as holidays by the City.

Filing Period for the April 7, 2026, General Election of the Municipal Judge and three Aldermen, one from each Ward:
Tuesday, December 9, 2025 at 8:00 a.m., through Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 5:00 p.m.

City Offices will be closed Thursday, December 25, 2025 and Friday, December 26, 2025 during the filing period.

Withdrawal of a Candidate
Candidates who wish to withdraw may do so by filing their notice of withdrawal with the City Clerk no later than 5:00 p.m. on Jan. 20, 2026). The filing fee is not refundable in case of withdrawal of a candidate. After Jan. 20, 2026, a candidate may withdraw with a court order up to the 6th Tuesday before the election (Feb. 24, 2026).

Candidate Name Policy
As required by the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners, all candidate names shall appear on the ballot in the same form in which the candidate is registered to vote. Prefixes and suffixes which represent titles or degrees shall not be used in any event.

The following exceptions, when certified by the candidate as a necessary means of identification, may be allowed: commonly used nicknames, commonly used abbreviations, and parenthetical reference to married names.

Candidates Must File in Person in the City Clerk's Office
Qualified persons wanting to file a Declaration of Candidacy for elective office must do so in person in the City Clerk's Office.

Obtaining Lists of Registered Voters and/or Election Results
Candidates who wish to obtain a list of registered voters for the City and/or their ward need to contact the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners or call (816) 325-4600. Results of previous elections are available from either the City Clerk's office at (816) 316-4811 (in Excel format, precinct and ward totals only) or the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners Election Results Website.

Those interested in registering to vote in any local, state, or national election may do so through the Jackson County Board of Election Commissioners  Voter Registration Website or call (816) 325-4600. You may also register to vote at Grandview City Hall. For more information on registering to vote at City Hall, click on the Register to Vote link at the top of this page.  According to State law you must register at least four weeks before the election in order to vote in that election.

Qualifications for Elective Office
The minimum qualifications for each office are listed below. The qualifications are set by State and City law. 

Mayor

• Must be at least 25 years of age.
• Must be U.S. citizen.
• Must be resident of Grandview at the time of and at least 1 year before election.
• Must be a registered voter.
• Must be current on all City taxes and fees, including business licenses and personal and real property taxes, before the close of filing for office.

Alderman

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must be U.S. citizen.
• Must be resident of the ward from which elected.
• Must be resident of Grandview at least 1 year before election.
• Must be a registered voter.
• Must be current on all City taxes and fees, including business licenses and personal and real property taxes, before the close of filing for office.

Municipal Judge

• Must be licensed attorney admitted to practice law in Missouri.
• Must be between 21 and 75 years of age.
• Must be resident of Grandview (no time restriction).
• Must be a registered voter.
• May not hold any other office with the City government, but may serve as Municipal Judge for another municipality.
• Must be current on all City taxes and fees, including business licenses and personal and real property taxes, before the close of filing for office.

Successful candidates may not be given the oath of office until they have fulfilled the campaign finance and personal financial disclosure reporting requirements.

At the time of filing, qualified candidates must provide the City Clerk proof of identity such as a social security card or Missouri driver's license, or must be recognizable to the City Clerk. A list of duties Aldermen perform can be found on this website.

Payment of Fees
Under City Code of Laws Section 2-4 and State law RSMo 115.342, "Any person who files as a candidate for election to a public office shall be disqualified from participation in the election for which the candidate has filed if such person is delinquent in the payment of any state income taxes, personal property taxes, municipal taxes, real property taxes on the place of residence, as stated on the declaration of candidacy, or if the person is a past or present corporate officer of any fee office that owes any taxes to the state."
