SNOW REMOVAL PROCEDURES

The Public Works Department is responsible for snow removal on all public streets within the City. For questions, concerns, or service requests please call (816) 316-4838 or email information@grandview.org

Our priority is first and foremost designated snow routes and the I-49 Outer Roads. If it becomes necessary to plow the neighborhoods, clearing will begin after snowfall has stopped and the designated snow routes have been cleared.

Calls from the public are handled as quickly as possible, however street crews do not deviate from the designated snow routes unless fire and/or police report an urgent situation.

You can help improve snow removal operations:

  • Park off the streets if possible.
  • Have proper snow or all-weather tires on your vehicle.
  • Wait to clear snow from driveways until the street has been plowed. If not possible, shovel all snow from your driveway to the right side as you are facing the street. This will lessen the amount of snow at the mouth of the drive when the snowplow comes down the street.

SNOW REMOVAL OPERATIONS

The City's streets are treated in the following order:

  • Designated Snow Route or Priority Streets
    • Continuous until adverse weather conditions cease and they are cleared.
  • Secondary Streets
    •  Beginning after cease of adverse weather conditions and Priority Streets are safe. Culs-de-sac and dead ends are done after secondary streets in subdivisions.
  • Our first priority is designated snow routes which allows emergency vehicles to be able to get around the City.
  • We strive to make it safe as possible for drivers who must get out.  If you do not need to go out please stay home. Generally we will confine our work to Snow Routes and selected “hot-spots”.
  • Crews do not plow or treat neighborhoods and side streets until the priority streets are completed.
  • Crews do not plow or treat culs-de-sac or dead ends until neighborhoods and side streets are completed.
  • The goal is to clear all city streets within 24 - 48 hours after snow has stopped falling.
  • Neighborhoods and side streets generally take up to 48 hours to plow in a lengthy snow or ice event, as it may be necessary for crews to return to emergency routes to plow again or re-salt streets.
  • It is always a drivers’ responsibility to slow down and drive with extra care when there is any precipitation this time of year.
  • All drivers need to make sure they do not exceed posted speed limits, and during precipitation they need to slow down accordingly.  Drivers also need to test their brakes, and remember to allow greater distances and spacing between vehicles when on public streets.
  •  The City does not treat or plow private property or private streets, and does not remove snow deposited in drive approaches by street plowing.
  • Snow removal on parking lots and sidewalks are the responsibility of the resident or property owner.
